How Aframe helped Arsenal
Arsenal Football Club (FC) is one of the most successful clubs in English football, with 13 First Division and Premier League titles and a record 12 FA Cups to their name.
Arsenal FC has one of the largest football fan bases in the world. With a global fan base in the hundreds of millions, the media team are faced daily with delivering engaging, unique, and timely content with a strong emphasis on video.
Arsenal Media Group is the digital arm of the club and is responsible for monetizing value from its media content. The group produces a range of written and visual content on a daily basis for Arsenal’s website, apps, social media channels and more.
Arsenal Media Group creates and manages the vast majority of its video production in house, creating hours of video footage on a daily basis that consists of documentaries, interviews, match day coverage, amongst others. The content is then published on Arsenal Player – an on-demand online video portal that has signed up over 1.6 million fans. With large volumes and variety of content, Arsenal needed to find a solution that could help it easily and securely manage and share content, as well as work collaboratively in a timely fashion.
The video content plays a huge part in the engagement between the club and the fans; providing them with additional content around the team and the game, which in turn helps drive reach and engagement. Video is also important to the club’s sponsors, partners and licensees.
John Dollin, Senior Systems and Operations Manager, Arsenal Broadband Ltd, commented, “The engagement with our fans and sponsors is key to our overall business strategy and Aframe has been instrumental when it comes to helping us achieve this.”
Aframe provides a one-size-fits-all ingest platform that can cope with the demands of a multitude of high resolution material, providing seamless transcoding, review and share facilities in the browser.
Dollin continues, “Aframe wasn’t the first time we had tried a video management platform, we had previously tried various file hosting and transfer services, but couldn’t cope with the amount of content we were creating or the complex functionality we required. However, with Aframe, all of the HD media is ingested directly from the camera in its native format and uploaded straight into a secure cloud storage facility through accelerated UDP file transfer technology – saving time and courier charges. This was key for us when it came to the decision process as it enables the team to reliably upload and handle content on a daily basis from remote locations without any loss in quality.”
Arsenal also uses Aframe for logging; a procedure that was previously very lengthy. Arsenal can now go through this process a lot more efficiently and everyone that needs to have access to the video can do so securely via the Aframe platform. “The logging process involves a number of different people in various locations, so it is important that they can all access it easily,” Dollin continues. “Aframe has really simplified the process, as the editors can now download the metadata from the platform and load it in to Premiere within minutes. We can also share the content simply by sending a link, and our teams can watch the footage on any device, which is extremely convenient.”
Arsenal’s journalists’ notes are added within Aframe as metadata before being transferred into the edit. All metadata automatically synchronizes with the high resolution material and is presented as markers on the timeline. This collaboration between cameraman, journalist and editor was not previously possible, but is now made painless through one centralized platform.
The team filters searches to focus on specific metadata, like the file title or team comments to quickly find the action they are looking for on the timeline. While the greatest goals, FA Cup wins and the “Invincibles” will always be in demand and repurposed for partners, Arsenal Media Group are able to materialize daily content such as behind the scenes interviews, press conferences and stadium action – ensuring they yield maximum value for their fans and subscribers.
Secure links are provided so users can download and confirm the content is both fit for purpose and consistent with the values of the football club - before being broadcast out onto the website, social media platforms, and worldwide TV broadcast programming.
Aframe also provides Arsenal Media Group with a secure central portal for clients to access, playback and download content. User access and permissions are managed by a dedicated team in London and all users are requested to register before access is provided. For sensitive content, project owners can limit a user’s access to only work within a dedicated space or a specified clip collection.
Dollin concludes, “Aframe is definitely a key part of our future video plans. It is also important for us that Aframe integrates with our MAM system and this is something we are looking to implement in order to streamline the processes even further. In addition to this, the overall technical support we have received from the team at Aframe is also great; they have ultimately become part of our wider video production family.”
